Foiled and Faceted Stained Glass - Merging Two Art Forms

3.1 Preparation of a dalle

After deciding on the design, a cartoon on which the panel will be constructed is produced. The cartoon ( see post on Cartoon ) shown below is for the panel, the construction of which, I will demonstrate. The next step is to pick the dalle or dalles that will be utilized in the panel.        ( see post on Choice of dalle. )

The remainder of the process is illustrated in the following video and described below

The next step is to trace all of the sections that will be composed of faceted glass using a heavy paper ( 100 lb )  and cut apart the individual pieces.

Place the dalle that you plan to utilize on a light box and use the separated pieces from the tracing, in this case the petals of the flower, as a guide for picking the most appropriate areas of the dalle for inclusion in the panel. This process allows for the avoidance of air bubbles, color differences and other defects.

Draw a line around each piece using a straight edge creating rectangles and number them corresponding to the appropriate petal.

The rectangles of glass are then separated using a 10 inch water cooled tile saw.                ( Wear eye protection! )

The blocks are now ready for the initial faceting. I should add that the best pen that I have found for writing on glass is shown below ( coating the markings with a thin layer of Vaseline will help prevent the water from the saw or grinder washing off the marks ).
